The Ashtavinayak — the eight sacred forms of Ganesha — are traditionally scattered across Maharashtra, and completing the pilgrimage to all eight takes days. This temple brings them together under one roof.
It is a recent build, and unusually good: intricately carved red sandstone, marble steps, a towering façade. Because it is new it draws far smaller crowds than the ancient temples — which makes it one of the calmest darshans in the city.
Go at sunset
The sandstone takes the low evening light beautifully and turns almost orange. If you are photographing anything in Ujjain besides the ghats, photograph this then.
