Every ancient Indian city had a guardian, and Ujjain's is Kal Bhairav — the Kotwal, the chief of police, the fierce form of Shiva who keeps order. The temple sits eight kilometres from the centre on the banks of the Shipra, and it is among the most genuinely strange places of worship in the country.
The offering
Liquor is offered here as prasad. A shallow bowl is held to the deity's lips and the liquid drains away in front of you — no spill, no vessel beneath, and no explanation that has ever satisfied anyone. Bottles are sold at every stall outside the gate.
It is not a spectacle laid on for visitors. This is a Tantric site of the Kapalika tradition, and the offering has been made here for centuries.
Getting there
Twenty minutes by road from Mahakaleshwar, best combined with Sandipani Ashram and Mangalnath in the same run since all three sit on that side of the river. Mornings are quieter; the temple closes at 7 PM.
