Ujjain has no commercial airport of its own. Nearly everyone flying in lands at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore (IDR) — about 55 km away, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by road.
By taxi (the easiest way)
A pre-booked one-way taxi is the simplest option, especially with luggage or elderly parents. Typical one-way fares at the time of writing:
- Hatchback or sedan (WagonR, Dzire) — about ₹1,700–₹2,000
- SUV (Ertiga, Carens) — about ₹2,300–₹2,500
- Innova Crysta — about ₹3,200 and up
Fares rise late at night and on festival days. App cabs work from the airport, but drivers sometimes cancel long outstation rides — a pre-booked car is more reliable.
By bus
Frequent buses run between Indore and Ujjain through the day. Take a cab or auto from the airport to the Indore bus stand first; the bus ride itself takes about 1.5–2 hours. It is the cheapest way, but awkward with luggage.
By train
Several trains run daily from Indore Junction to Ujjain Junction, about 1.5 hours. You still need a cab from the airport to Indore Junction, and from Ujjain Junction to your hotel.
Arriving late?
If you land after 9 PM and have a Bhasma Aarti permit for the next morning, go straight to Ujjain and sleep near the temple — you will need to leave the hotel around 2:30 AM. Ask your driver to track the flight so a delay does not cost you waiting charges.
