Ujjain 1-Day Itinerary: Cover Mahakal & the Top Temples
Short on time? Ujjain's holiest sites can be covered comfortably in a single well-planned day. Here is a tried-and-tested 1-day itinerary that puts Mahakal first and flows naturally through the city.
Early morning (4:00–7:00 AM) — Mahakaleshwar
Begin with the Bhasma Aarti if you have a booking, or the early-morning darshan of the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. Mornings are cooler and the temple is at its most serene.
Morning (7:30–9:30 AM) — Mahakal Lok
Right beside the temple, walk the magnificent Mahakal Lok corridor — 900 metres of carved statues narrating the legends of Shiva. Grab breakfast nearby afterward.
Late morning (10:00–11:30 AM) — Kal Bhairav
Visit the Kal Bhairav temple, the guardian deity of Ujjain, famous for the offering of liquor as prasad. It's a short drive from the city centre on the banks of the Shipra.
Midday (12:00–1:30 PM) — Harsiddhi & lunch
Stop at the Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth with its towering lamp pillars, then break for lunch.
Afternoon (2:30–4:30 PM) — Sandipani Ashram & Mangalnath
See Sandipani Ashram, where Lord Krishna studied, and Mangalnath, considered the birthplace of Mars. Both are calm and quick to visit.
Evening (5:30–7:00 PM) — Ram Ghat aarti
End the day at Ram Ghat on the Shipra for the soul-stirring evening Maha Aarti — rows of lamps reflecting on the river. Arrive 20 minutes early for a good spot.
