Ujjain to Omkareshwar: Distance, Travel Options & Day Trip

Many pilgrims pair Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar with the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga — two of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas in one trip. Here's how to make the journey.

Distance and travel time

Omkareshwar is about 130–140 km from Ujjain, roughly a 3-hour drive by road via Indore. It makes a comfortable day trip or an overnight add-on.

How to get there

  • Private cab (recommended): the easiest option — door to door, flexible timing, ideal for families and elders.
  • Bus: regular buses run from Ujjain and Indore towards Omkareshwar; budget-friendly but slower, often with a change.
  • Train + road: trains connect via Indore or Khandwa, followed by a short road transfer to the temple.

About Omkareshwar

Set on the sacred Mandhata island in the Narmada river, shaped like the holy 'Om', Omkareshwar is the fourth Jyotirlinga. The riverside setting, boat crossing and ghats make it deeply peaceful.

Suggested day-trip plan

  • Leave Ujjain early (around 6:00 AM)
  • Reach Omkareshwar by mid-morning for darshan
  • Visit the Mamleshwar temple and the Narmada ghats
  • Return to Ujjain by evening
Tip: Combine the trip with Maheshwar — famous for its riverside ghats and handloom weaving — if you have an extra half-day.
