Mahakaleshwar Darshan Timings, Aarti Schedule & Temple Rules

हिंदी में पढ़ें

Mahakaleshwar opens before dawn and closes late at night, but the day is built around five aartis. Knowing that rhythm — and the two or three rules that catch first-time visitors — is the difference between a calm darshan and three hours in a queue.

Temple opening hours

The temple is open from about 3:00 AM until about 11:00 PM. General darshan runs through the day between the aartis; you can join the free queue at any time it is open.

Aarti schedule

  • Bhasma Aarti — about 4:00–6:00 AM (permit needed; see our Bhasma Aarti booking guide)
  • Morning (Naivedya) Aarti — about 7:00–7:30 AM
  • Bhog Aarti — about 10:00–10:30 AM
  • Sandhya (evening) Aarti — about 5:00–5:30 PM
  • Shayan Aarti — about 10:30–11:00 PM, the last of the day

Timings shift slightly with the season and on festival days, so treat these as a guide and confirm on the day.

Free darshan vs. Shighra (quick) darshan

General darshan is free. On an ordinary weekday the queue takes roughly 45–90 minutes; on Mondays, weekends, Shravan and Mahashivratri it can run past three hours.

The Shighra Darshan ticket — ₹250 per person at the time of writing — puts you in a shorter, faster queue. It is sold in time slots from about 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, online on the temple's official portal and at counters. Reach 20–30 minutes before your slot for the security check.

Mobile phones, bags and footwear

Phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside the temple. Leave them in the free cloakrooms at the Mahakal Lok entrance along with your footwear, and keep only your ID and ticket. Photographs are fine in the Mahakal Lok corridor outside.

Dress code

There is no strict dress code for general darshan — modest clothes are enough. The Bhasma Aarti and any ritual close to the Jyotirlinga require traditional dress: dhoti (sola) for men and a saree for women.

Best time for a quiet darshan

  • Weekday mornings just after the 7 AM aarti
  • Early afternoon (1–4 PM), when most tour groups are at lunch
  • Avoid Mondays, Sundays and festival days if you can
Tip: With elderly parents, ask at the gate for the senior-citizen and divyang assistance queue — it saves most of the standing.

Want it arranged?
