Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti: Timings, Booking & Complete Guide
The Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar is the most powerful and sought-after darshan in Ujjain — a pre-dawn ritual where Lord Mahakal is worshipped with sacred ash (bhasma). Here is everything a pilgrim needs to know to attend it smoothly.
What is the Bhasma Aarti?
Bhasma Aarti is performed every morning before sunrise, when the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is bathed and adorned with holy ash to the sound of drums, conch and Vedic chants. It is believed to awaken Lord Shiva as Mahakal — the lord of time and death. Mahakaleshwar is the only Jyotirlinga where this unique aarti is offered daily.
Bhasma Aarti timing
The aarti begins at approximately 4:00 AM and lasts around two hours. Devotees are usually seated inside well before it starts, so plan to reach the temple by around 2:30–3:00 AM after completing the entry formalities.
How to book the Bhasma Aarti
Seats are limited and almost always need advance booking. There are two ways:
- Online: through the official Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple management website, where you fill in pilgrim details, upload a valid photo ID and pay a small permit fee. Booking opens several days in advance and fills quickly.
- Offline: at the temple's permit counter a day or two before, subject to availability.
Demand is highest on Mondays, weekends, the month of Shravan, Mahashivratri and Nagpanchami — book as early as you can for these dates.
Dress code
Traditional attire is required to sit for the aarti: men usually wear a dhoti or kurta-pyjama, and women a saree. Carry the dress if needed and change near the temple.
What to carry
- Your booking confirmation / permit
- The same photo ID used for booking
- Minimal belongings — phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside
