Two seasons pull the biggest crowds to Mahakal outside the Simhastha: Mahashivratri and the holy month of Shravan. Both are spiritually powerful and both need planning.
Mahashivratri 2027
Mahashivratri falls on Saturday, 6 March 2027. In Ujjain the celebration begins days earlier with Shiv Navratri, when Mahakal is adorned in a different form each day. On Mahashivratri itself the temple keeps darshan open for a very long stretch, often through the night, and lakhs of devotees come through.
- Expect queues of several hours. Arrive before dawn or late at night when lines are shorter.
- Bhasma Aarti permits for these days sell out the moment booking opens — book exactly 30 days ahead.
- Hotels near the temple fill weeks in advance; book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Shravan and the Mahakal Sawari
Shravan (Sawan) falls in July–August. Every Monday of Shravan and Bhadrapad, Mahakal leaves the temple in a palanquin procession — the Sawari — through the old city to the Shipra and back, with bands, tableaux and huge crowds. The season ends with the grand Shahi Sawari. In 2026 the sawaris ran from 3 August to the Shahi Sawari on 7 September; the 2027 dates are announced by the temple before the season.
- Watch the procession from a balcony or a shop front on the route instead of the street.
- Monday darshan in Shravan is the most crowded of the year — visit Tuesday to Thursday if you can.
- It is monsoon season: carry an umbrella and expect wet ghats.
Crowd tips for both
- Use the free cloakrooms and carry nothing but ID and a little cash.
- Keep children's hands, and give each a card with your phone number.
- Senior citizens should ask for the assisted queue at the gate.
